Go (Away) Daddy, Or, Why Danica Patrick Is Only Secondarily a Race Car Driver

Perhaps like Iggy, you spent part or even all of your past Sunday watching the Indianapolis 500. I follow racing only a little, but I pay enough attention to SportsCenter to know the key names--Castroneves, Franchitti, Patrick. Although the dominant story of this year's race is Helio Castroneves' victory--his third, and one that came in the midst of an ongoing tax evasion investigation--what I paid most attention to was Danica Patrick. This is not for the obvious reasons, or at least not exactly.
Look, Danica Patrick is attractive and marketable. Ok, fine. That her commericals for Peak anti-freeze might be unnecessarily sexy is probably an acceptable situation given that it's at least a car-related product. But as I've noted here, here, and here, I'm troubled by the willingness of so many attractive female athletes to define themselves by their sexuality and not by their ability. Patrick has done this in numerous ways, including several magazine spreads and her endorsement deal with GoDaddy.com.
Her relationship with GoDaddy.com isn't new, but to my knowledge this commercial is (here's the "Internet Only" extended version). I'm not certain how many times it aired during Sunday's broadcast, but I can assure you it was several (and there probably wasn't a single commercial break that didn't include at least one Danica ad). This particular spot is troubling for a number of reasons, not least of which is that Patrick isn't on display so much as she is positioned as a voyeur who (perhaps unwillingly) witnesses the strip-tease of the police officer. The television version is more suggestive of what the Internet version makes explicit. Nevertheless, it's clear that Patrick is situated in a scene of heterosexual male fantasy--i.e., the interplay of two conventionally attractive women designed to hint at the possibility of lesbian lust.
There's an interesting identification strategy in the commercial, as Patrick is somewhat masculinized--she is the driver of a red sports car, wearing black leather, in the position of the "watcher." Meanwhile, the blonde officer offers herself overtly as a sexual object before reaffirming her authority by writing Patrick a speeding ticket. The gender ambiguity, coupled with the power tensions between the two women, is clearly designed, as are all GoDaddy.com commercials, to please the predominantly male television audience. All of which most likely prompts them to want to see more of Danica Patrick in these commercials, regardless of whether or not they see her in the race.
The constant exposure certainly generates a lot of publicity for Indy Car racing, and Patrick's presence in the race undoubtedly heightens ratings. Yet, despite her steadily improving results, Danica Patrick is overwhelmingly valued for her sex appeal and not her skill. This is very profitable for her, but it grows the deficit of positive images for young women in and around sport. Patrick finished this year's race in third place, a career best. But as she crossed the finish line in her GoDaddy.com-sponsored car, I can't help but think that her athletic integrity is at an all-time low.

Couldn't agree more, but yet I wonder whether she has accepted this role as simply part of her job as an entertainer (the whole thing only makes the prospect of her joining NASCAR next season all the more intriguing).

Makes you wonder, though, whether Danica helps to solidify the expectation that female athletes need to apply themselves as sexual objects for men.

As another example of the GoDaddy brand is aspiring golf pro Anna Lawson. Darren Rovell wrote about her earlier this month (http://www.cnbc.com/id/30619195/). A quote from her manager, comparing Lawson to the world's best female golfer Lorena Ochoa:

"When Lorena wins, it's not like she becomes more valuable every time she wins," Rodriguez said. "No one in the marketing world is counting. Regardless of whether Anna is winning, her picture stops the page."

By the way, picked up a copy of the Sports Media and Identity book and really enjoyed the piece on Miracle, especially the Michael Leff reference (after a semester with Houck on crit of public address, to see a p.a. scholar in a sports piece was inspiring).

Thanks for mentioning it, but unfortunately, having accidentally sliced my cable line while doing yard work, I listened to the Indy 500 on radio instead of watching it. It did, though remind me of how much I love sports on radio. I might have a new tradition. :)

As for the post, agreed overall, but I'm not sure about the last sentence. Perhaps I speak as too much a member of a limited crowd to gauge the nation's assessment of Danica Patrick more generally, but, as someone who watches nearly every Indy Racing League race, I'd say that I hear her discussed this season more than ever before in terms of her racing ability and talent. This is just a general impression, but announcers each week seem to be acknowledging her accomplishments and her performance on the racetrack, and they seem to be considering her a candidate to win races more often than ever before.

While there were those who detracted from it (even though plenty of other drivers have won at least part because of fuel strategy), her win last year seems to have legitimized her more fully. She also drives for one of the top 3 teams in the IRL and her results have been steadily getting better over the last couple of years. She seems to be getting acclaimed for developing as a driver (having more patience, learning to get more from the car, etc.) that, while I think inevitably gendered in some ways, really seems for the most part to be typical of how a racer in one's 5th year or so would be discussed.

So, it seems to me that, at least within IRL circles, her athletic integrity is and is recognized as highly as ever. The question I would have is whether that in of itself contributes to the continued use of sexuality. In other words, does success on the racetrack just make her more marketable and, thus, lead to more GoDaddy, etc. use of her sexuality? Inevitably, Anna Kournikova's popularity petered out (sorry for the unintentional pun there) when she couldn't compete well enough on the highest level. If Danica Patrick does keep improving as a driver and finds greater success on the track because of it, will it sustain the sex image stuff as well?

Of course, there are rumors of a potential switch of Patrick to NASCAR, which would change the situation in a number of ways, I think. Part of that equation is that IRL racers have not had much success in that transition lately, largely because, I think, it's a different kind of racing (and, thus, NASCAR folks wouldn't find the switch easy either).

Having gone to the race, doesn't make me qualified to assess the situation, but I do believe that while Patrick is improving, she is still not considered a credible threat to win anytime soon. You ask why she resorts to exploitation, maybe that's all she has to go on. Not being a NASCAR fan, I really don't know what I'm talking about but from what I've heard it's more of a case about the best driver, and she could be even less credible if she makes the switch.

Thanks for the good comments, guys.

As for the Miracle essay, I included the Leff reference because Sage insisted on continuity between chapters--so even as a critical rhetorician, I had to include "Method," "Results," etc. Especially since this was not a rhetoric-specific audience, I thought this was an efficient route.

Hate to say it was simply a pragmatic choice, but, well, it was. :)
