Clemson Conference

As much as is possible, I try to avoid sounding too much like an "academic" in my posts. So generally, I don't include a lot of academic references. However, for those interested in the scholarship about sports that is being done in the field we call "Communication," I encourage you to check out the program for the Third Summit on Communication and Sport. This conference is being hosted by Associate Professor Andrew Billings of Clemson University. Andy does excellent work on how sports media portray identities--gender, race, nationality--in major broadcast events. His new book, Olympic Media: Inside the Biggest Show on Television, is available this spring.

Tomorrow morning, a friend from BGSU and I will make the 10 hour drive to Clemson. It should be a good trip.

How was it? I didn't see soccer or Italy in the program. : )

I know you mean that tongue-in-cheek, but it's a good point. As a developing enterprise, this group is still U.S.-centric. Soccer and other influences would be a welcome addition--hint, hint.

Regardless, it was an excellent conference. It was friendly yet intellectually engaged, and there's a growing sense that we're up to something good with the sport/comm intersection. Plus, it was nice to have some good weather.
